Welcome

Ruth Oseid Johnson is a painter in oils and a color lithographic printmaker.  Her paintings are in the permanent collections of two major museums in Minnesota:  the Minnesota Museum of American Art and the Minnesota Historical Museum.   She is also in numerous private and corporate collections* across the country and in Europe.  Her work currently may be seen at the  Grand Hand Gallery and Cafe Latte,  both on Grand Avenue in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Johnson focuses on the effects of light in interior settings and in her landscapes.  Color and design are tools she uses to bring her paintings and prints to life.  People, either as individuals or groups, are frequent subjects in her work, and the interaction between them and their environment, whether implied or apparent, never cease to fascinate her.

Lithography, a form of printmaking that is worked on Bavarian limestone slabs or metal plates, has been another interest of Johnson's since 1992  when she studied with a master printer for a year at the University of Minnesota.  She has her her own press in her studio and she thoroughly enjoys the contrast between painting and printmaking.

“The process of painting and printmaking is as significant to me as is the result of that work. Hopefully the result is an image that reveals my intent and that also speaks to the viewer. While working on a painting or print, there is often an obsession driven by glimpses into the future of
that work that keeps me wanting to do art and looking forward to what comes next.”
